The general purpose of the role
The Research Director will be responsible for leading the research component of the EMP through the implementation of the research and learning agenda, and ensuring that all activities on this agenda are aligned with the objectives of the Client and EMP (FCDO). This position will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We are looking for individuals with a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world..
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and oversee the implementation of EMP .’s research and learning agenda
- Connect the research and learning agenda to the broader EMP MERL framework and with the international literature on research methodologies
- Ensure that research products are aligned with the overall EMP goals and activities. For example, ensuring a research agenda reflects the information an EMP needs in order to achieve better outcomes for its beneficiaries
- Formulate and finalize research questions and methodology for proposed research topics by working closely with the EMP MERL leader, program leadership, and relevant team members
- Work with the program team to ensure that the topics and research questions selected will meet the needs of the program and to ensure that the methodology is appropriate and conflict-sensitive.
- Work with the program team to turn evidence into action, adapting our programs based on research findings
- Analyze qualitative data as needed according to the research agenda and design KIIs and FGD methodologies for field staff to collect qualitative data when needed
- Formulate concise and useful research products, ensuring that findings and recommendations are linked to up-to-date evidence
- Drafting final research outputs and presentations ready to be presented to the client (FCDO), and presenting them to the team, FCDO or other external audiences in line with EMP’s learning agenda

REQUIREMENTS
Experience and Technical Competencies: (Includes years of experience)
- At least 7 years of experience designing, conducting and reporting on research for donor-funded projects
- Experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative social research, including data analysis and reporting. Experience with qualitative and quantitative research programs is desirable
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences or related field
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven experience in producing high quality reports for international donor audiences
- A team player who has the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to communicate complex ideas (including research methods) in a clear manner to non-specialized audiences within the team
- Understand how findings are widely communicated to specialized and non-specialized audiences, to influence the uptake of findings/recommendations
- Experience in writing brief research briefs and working with implementation teams to adapt programs based on those findings
- Knowledge and understanding of Ethiopia and the broader Horn of Africa context, including humanitarian and migration-related issues
- Work experience on FCDO funded projects is required
- Demonstrate leadership, diversity and integrity

Education (including certificates, licenses, etc.)
- Degree in Law, Social Sciences, International Development, or any other related field
Languages: (indicate fluency level)
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- Fluency in Amharic
- Other local languages a plus
