Eid-al-Adha
The “Feast of the Sacrifice” occurs every autumn, albeit the lunar calendar causes the precise date to change. The Islamic feast, which celebrates prophet Abraham’s readiness to offer his son as a sacrifice, is significant everywhere. Families typically dress elegantly and gather for prayer at a mosque or other gathering place. To represent Abraham’s sacrifice, they offer the best halal domestic animals as sacrifices. To ensure that everyone can enjoy the celebration, the community ultimately shares the majority of the meat.
Diwali
The annual “Festival of Lights” is a five-day event that takes place in November or December. It commemorates Swami Dayanand’s passing on his death anniversary and the achievement of nirvana by Indian sage Mahavira. The celebration, which is mostly observed in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and other Asian nations, involves burning little clay lamps to represent the triumph of good over evil. There are many Buddhists and non-Buddhists who can benefit from and spread the lesson of flexibility and humility.
Las Posadas
This nine-day festival, which is observed from December 16 to 24, has its origins in Spanish Catholicism, however it is also observed by a number of Christian denominations in Guatemala, Mexico, and the Southwestern United States. Families parade from home to house carrying a candle in a paper lamp shade that each house signs to honor the impending holiday. Hanukkah
Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish holiday, begins on the Hebrew calendar’s 25th day of Kislev. The occasion honors the Jews’ triumph over an oppressive ruler and the rededication of the Jerusalem temple during the Maccabean Revolt. As a symbol of the oil that miraculously lasted eight days and lighted the ever-burning flame in the Jerusalem Temple, families mark the festival by lighting the menorah and saying prayers for eight nights.
Christmas
Christmas is the Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus, which is observed on December 25 across the globe. Christmas is centered on the Christian liturgical year and stems from “Christ’s Mass.” Many countries also observe it as a civil holiday, and as part of the festivities, families deck the halls of their houses with lights and greenery, sing songs, partake in holiday fare, and exchange gifts. Kwanzaa
This week-long holiday, which Maulana Karenga instituted in 1966, runs from December 26 to January 1. In order to celebrate African ancestry in African-American culture, communities in the US, Canada, and the African diaspora decorate their homes with vibrant artwork and textiles, read and reflect on the African Pledge, and hold a candle-lighting ritual. During this period, communities commemorate seven fundamental values: independence, harmony, group effort and responsibility, cooperative economics, creativity, meaning, and faith. The culmination of the week is a feast and gift-giving.
