About NECTA

The National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) is a government organization formed in 1973 by Parliamentary Act No. 21. Tanzania’s National Examinations Council (NECTA) is in charge of administering all national examinations.

NECTA was formed as a result of Tanzania Mainland’s withdrawal from the East African Examinations Council (EAEC) in April 1971, in order to conduct her own examinations. In 1970, Zanzibar left the EAEC. Tanzania sat for overseas Secondary School Examinations jointly conducted by the East African Syndicate between 1968 and 1971, which were previously conducted by the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate alone.

The School Certificate and Higher School Certificate Examinations were held by the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate at the time. African students first took the School Certificate Examinations in 1947, and the Higher School Certificate Examinations in 1960. NECTA Contact Address
