Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy was initially a product of Kivukoni College. In February 1958, the TANU National Conference held in Tabora passed a resolution to establish an adult college modeled on Ruskin College in Oxford.

The college was to be a tool to spread an understanding of the social, political and economic problems facing underdeveloped countries like Tanganyika among people who were likely to become leaders in a newly independent country but who did not have the qualifications to enter educational institutions.

The Adult College was formally incorporated on July 29, 1961 as a private company under the Companies Act (CAP 212).
