About CAF Champions League
The CAF Champions League, formerly the African Cup of Champions Clubs and now known as the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League for sponsorship reasons, is an annual club football competition hosted by the Confederation of African Football and competed in by top-tier African clubs. The competition is decided by a round-robin group stage that determines qualification for a double-legged knockout stage, followed by a single leg final. It is both the most prestigious club competition in African football and one of the most prestigious football events in the entire globe.
The winner of the competition qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup, which is played between the champion teams from each of the six continental confederations. They also get to play the winner of the CAF Confederation Cup in the CAF Super Cup the following year. The second-tier CAF Confederation Cup is open to clubs that place second in their national leagues but did not advance to the Champions League.
Clubs from Egypt have won the most championships (16), followed by Morocco with 7. The countries with the most champions are Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, each with three clubs. 26 clubs have won the competition, and 12 of them clubs have won it more than once. With a record 10 championships, Al Ahly is the most successful club in the competition’s history. The 2022 championship was won by Wydad Casablanca, who defeated Al Ahly by a score of two goals to nil.
