Since qualifying for the 1980 African Cup of Nations, Tanzania endured nearly 40 years without major success, struggling in African and World Cup qualifiers. Their best effort was qualifying for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, where Taifa Stars beat Burkina Faso twice and finished just three points behind group leaders Senegal.

In 2010, Tanzania won the CECAFA Cup for the third time. The most recent success was a 1-0 win over South Africa in the 2017 COSAFA Cup Quarter Finals.

But later, Tanzania lost the Semi-Final with 2-4 goals against Zambia. Then, in the play-off for third place, Tanzania managed to win the match against Lesotho with 4-2 goals on penalty kicks after extra time ended in a goalless draw.

This third place was seen as the biggest success of Tanzanian football in many years.

On March 24, 2019, Tanzania defeated East African rivals, Uganda 3-0 to reach the final of the African Cup of Nations for the first time in 39 years.

In the Final Taifa Stars, being the weakest team in the group, lost all three matches of Group C, as predicted. A few months later, Tanzania qualified for the African Nations Championship for only the second time, as well as beating Burundi in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
