The university’s purpose and vision statements have been changed as part of the Strategic Planning process. The IHL Board reviewed and approved these remarks (March 2009).

MISSION STATEMENT

Alcorn State University, a Historically Black College and University, is a comprehensive land-grant college with a diverse student and staff body that cherishes a rich heritage. Through the combination of multiple pedagogies, applied and basic research, cultural and professional programs, public service and outreach, and access to globally competitive academic and research programs, the University stresses intellectual development and lifelong learning. Alcorn University seeks to equip graduates to be well-rounded future leaders with strong moral character who can succeed in the global marketplace of the twenty-first century.

VISION STATEMENT

Alcorn State University will grow into a nationally recognized comprehensive land-grant university. Through collaborative collaborations that benefit the surrounding communities, states, nation, and world, it will develop diverse students into internationally competitive leaders and apply scientific research.

UNIVERSITY GOALS

Student-centered.
Continue to provide students with a stimulating, transformative learning and living environment that will enable them to become internationally competitive, socially and ecologically conscious, and technologically capable leaders.

Excellence in the classroom.
Continually improve academic performance and gain national recognition as a leading comprehensive land-grant university that provides stimulating intellectual experiences and collaborative research possibilities.

Professionalism and shared governance
Examine its procedures to ensure that open and honest communication, meritocratic systems, and accountability are in place.

Infrastructure and technology improvements.
Develop and implement a strategy to guarantee that the University’s vision and purpose are realized through technology and infrastructure.

Diversification and enhancement of resources
Enhance its resources and diversify its revenue sources through collaborations, innovative fundraising techniques, intellectual property exploitation, and entrepreneurship.

Alcorn State University (ASU)

Alcorn State Institution is Mississippi’s second oldest public university and the nation’s oldest historically black land-grant university (HBCU). More than 50 top-degree programs are available at Alcorn State, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The University of Mississippi is celebrating 150 years of academic excellence on 1700 acres in Lorman, Mississippi, with branches in Vicksburg and Natchez.

U.S. News and World Report has Alcorn State University recognized as one of the top 20 best HBCUs in the country. Alcorn University’s tuition and fees are among the lowest in the region, in addition to its excellent scholarship opportunities. The University is the most economical for online bachelor’s (no. 3), online master’s (no. 8) and bachelor’s degrees (no. 8) among all HBCUs (no. 13). It is listed in another national rating.
