About

History
On June 17, 1911—the 100th anniversary of 19th-century Icelandic statesman Jón Sigursson, who is often referred to as “president”—the University of Iceland was established. For the first 29 years, the University was housed at the Parliament House in Austurvöllur.

Housing for students is not offered or guaranteed by the University of Iceland. The majority of students live off-campus because there is a severe lack of housing on campus. In the pricey city of Reykjavik, a person’s monthly rent will normally start at 100,000 ISK (about 720 EUR). The following options are available for housing in Reykjavik.

Accreditation

According to the Higher Education Institutions Act No. 63/2006, the Rules on the Accreditation of Higher Education Institutions No. 1067/2006, and the Rules on Doctorate Programmes in Higher Education Institutions No. 37/2007, the Minister of Education, Science, and Culture accredited the University of Iceland to offer curricula leading to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in all of its Schools. Following an expert review by overseas quality assurance specialists, the accreditation was given.
