The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) It is a student financial aid program of the South African Government that provides financial assistance to undergraduate students to help pay for their higher education after completing high school. It is funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Training. What is NSFAS?
NSFAS is a scholarship that operates nationwide in South Africa, providing financial support to people entering higher education (colleges, universities, professional courses). NSFAS is open to anyone who cannot afford this education through other means, such as regular student loans or bank financing.

NSFAS allowance | How much does NSFAS pay students?

The scholarships cover not only the registration and tuition fees, but also the provision of other annual allowances. In 2021, these provisions amounted to the following:

• Accommodation allowance based on what is charged by the college or university (special accommodation costs cannot exceed the costs of residence halls or hostels provided by the institution).
• Book allowance 5200 rand.
• Living allowance of 15,000 rand.
• Personal care allowance of R2,900.

Who qualifies to apply?

In order to apply for NSFAS online for 2022- 2023, you must be a South African citizen, have been accepted for an undergraduate qualification for the first time, and be able to prove an annual household income of no more than R350,000. It should be noted that meeting these criteria is not a guarantee of being accepted for the NSFAS.

You will need to provide certain information, so it is worth getting this prepared in advance. How to Apply for NSFAS 2022 Online

Applications for the academic year 2022 open on September 1 and close on November 30, 2021. The easiest way to apply is online, via the NSFAS website, but students can also apply via the Financial Aid office, the National Youth Development Agency offices or on the campus where they study. Applications provide a reference number and can be verified via the NSFAS website. Late application will be announced on www.nsfas.org.za

It goes without saying that due to the popularity of NSFAS, not everyone who applies will be successful. NSFAS appeals are set out on the NSFAS website, where candidates can review their reasons for refusal and state their reasons for their appeal in writing (this should not exceed 1,000 characters). The appeal window closes in March of each year.
