The Azam Federation Cup is the premiere knockout tournament in Tanzanian football. Previously, the Nyerere Cup was the first tournament by knockout. It was created in 1974 and fought by teams from both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar Islands.

History shows that Yanga was the first team to win the title in the 2015/16 season. He got it after defeating Azam 3-1 in the final. But since Yanga was the English Premier League champion at the time, he allowed the rivals to enter to represent the FA Cup.

The cup champion represents the country in the African Confederations Cup. In the 2016/2017 season, the Premier League title holders in Tanzania won the cup.
