In 1974, the University of Houston bought the South Texas Junior College’s assets and established the University of Houston-Downtown College as a four-year university at One Main Street. By fall 2007, there were a record 11,793 students enrolled, and the College of Business moved into a new building on Shea Street to welcome back students. UHD now teaches more than 14,400 students yearly.


The University of Houston-Downtown is a comprehensive four-year institution that offers bachelor’s and select master’s degree programs, as well as options for lifelong learning and outstanding academic and vocational preparation. The University, which is in the center of the city and reflects the variety of the Greater Houston Area, interacts with the local community through its academic programs to solve needs and promote regional development. UHD is an open community committed to fusing education, volunteerism, and academic research to nurture students’ skills and get them ready for success in a fast-paced, international society.


UHD has a number of available resources to support sponsored programs and research activities.

The Office of Sponsored Programs provides a central location for sponsored project activities. This centralized function is designed to protect the integrity of UHD research. The office provides support to the faculty by facilitating the improvement and development of the sponsored programs climate at UHD.


At UHD, the Talent Acquisition Department is devoted to attracting and keeping talented people. Student services

The division includes the Office of Student Affairs, Admissions, Registrar, Career Development Center, Student Health Services, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Sports & Fitness, Veterans Services, Center for Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, International Study Abroad, and Testing Services. It also includes Student Activities & Events, Disability Services, Student Counseling Services, Sports & Fitness, and Student Activities & Events.

Housing services

Whether you are a first-year student or graduate student, Student Housing & Residential Life provides an experience that is focused on student success. We are here to serve you and to support the mission of the University.

Library services

For groups of three to ten persons, study rooms are available. Some are open 24/7 and accessible without reservations, even on days and during library closing times (on those days enter the building through the UHD Police Department entrance on Girard Street).

ICT services

Prepare yourself for success at UHD, students! The information technology team is available to give you access to a solid, secure technology infrastructure and support services that are tailored to your requirements.

Medical services

In order to assist international travelers in preparing to treat illness and injury abroad, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes travel advisories and publications concerning travel-health related topics.
