The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) is a public distance learning university in Tanzania. It was established by Parliament Act No. 17 of 1992. It is a one-stop institution that offers certificate, diploma and degree courses through distance learning. It is headquartered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and conducts its operations through 30 regional centers and 70 study centres. The university has a capacity of approximately 70,000 local and international students.

1. Diploma and certificates

Admission requirements for certificate and diploma courses/programs

1. Certificate in Foundation Course (OFC)

Applicants who do not qualify immediately under the degree program requirements may enroll in the foundation course for which a degree is awarded. This is the pre-university entry program offered by the Institute of Continuing Education to suit the requirements of different colleges.

Admission requirements

(a) Secondary Education Examination Certificate with 5 passes or 3 O-level credits or equivalent in approved subjects, as well as A-level Secondary Examination Certificate with 1 major pass and 1 or more Affiliates.
or
(b) An O-level Secondary Education Examination Certificate or equivalent with 5 passes or 3 credits in approved subjects plus a certificate obtained after attending a professional course of at least nine months in relation to the degree program the applicant intends to pursue.
or
(c) In rare cases, an O-level Secondary Education Examination Certificate or equivalent with 5 passes or 3 credits in approved subjects plus exceptional experience may be considered on its own merit.

or
(d) An applicant with an O-level Secondary Education Examination Certificate or equivalent with 5 passes or 3 credits in approved subjects. He must also have participated in an A-level examination but failed; or hold a recognized degree obtained after attending a professional course of at least six months duration related to the degree program they intend to pursue. He must also apply and pass the Open University of Tanzania OFC admission test (OFC 100)

(e) An applicant who satisfies the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Examination with a grade point average of at least C is eligible for consideration for admission to the OFC programmes. The applicant’s RPL exam score must have been obtained in the RPL exam taken at designated RPL testing centers approved by TCU and must have been obtained within the last three years from the date the exam was taken.

2. Certificate of a distance education course

Admission requirements

The minimum course entry requirements are as follows:
(a) A Form IV certificate or equivalent with at least 4 passes plus a professional certificate obtained from a recognized national training institution
or
(b) A diploma, advanced diploma, first degree or postgraduate degree.

3. Certificate course in poultry health and production

Admission requirements:
Four passes at ‘O’ level or equivalent, passes must include Biology/Agriculture and Chemistry.

4. Diploma course in distance education and open education

Admission requirements:
(a) Class B and above, Distance Learning Degree from the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) or equivalent qualification.
or
(b) 4 passes at O-level or equivalent plus at least two years of relevant professional experience.
or
(c) At least one major laissez-passer and one A-level subsidiary plus one year of relevant professional experience.
or
(d) A two-year diploma or certificate in any related field e.g. Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, etc.

5. CYP Diploma in Youth in Development Work

Admission requirements
(a) Four O-level passes or equivalent plus at least two years of youth work experience.
or
(b) Professional Certificate in a Commonwealth Youth Program plus three O-level credits and at least two years of youth work experience.
or
(c) One major permit and one minor A-level plus one year youth work experience.
or
(d) A two-year diploma or degree from any field related to youth employment plus at least one year of youth work experience.

In addition to the above, the applicant must be proficient in oral and written English. He or she will be asked to sit for the test.
