There are many reasons why Germany is a favorite destination for foreign students, starting with the fact that it is really budget friendly. Compared to other study destinations outside Europe, living in Germany as an international student comes at a lower cost. However, living in a foreign country while you are away from home means that you must possess perfect financial management skills. It is estimated that the cost of living in Germany is around 853 euros per month. As this can be challenging for international students, many programs offer students the opportunity to receive financial support in the form of a scholarship. DAAD Scholarship Programs The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) or the German Academic Exchange Service is a joint organization of German higher education institutions, responsible for promoting international academic relations. They focus on exchange students, academics and researchers who provide scholarships and funding to foreign students, postgraduate students and scholars in Germany. DAAD Scholarships are awarded to students who wish to pursue a qualification in a full-time course of study. Applicants must have completed their Bachelor’s degree in no more than the past 6 years and must have at least 2 years of proven work experience. The stipend amount for the DAAD scholarship is 850€ per month for postgraduate students and 1200€ per month for doctoral students. Heinrich Boll Foundation Scholarships in Germany The Heinrich Böll Foundation awards approximately 1,200 scholarships annually to aspiring undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities. These students must be pursuing their studies at state or recognized universities in Germany. Scholarship receipts are expected to have outstanding academic records and be politically and socially engaged, while demonstrating an interest in values such as the environment, sustainability, democracy, human rights, self-determination as well as justice. Non-EU students in Master’s studies will receive 850€ per month, in addition to individual allowances (tuition fees may be possible). EU students of the same academic level will receive €649 plus €300 book per month. It is granted for the regular study period with the possibility of extending it by one semester. On the other hand, PhD students coming from countries outside the European Union will receive 1200 EUR per month, in addition to 100 EUR per month mobility allowance and other individual allowances (excluding tuition fees). PhD students coming from the European Union, will receive €1350 per month, plus €100 allowance for research costs (excluding tuition fees). The scholarship is awarded for a period of two years with the possibility of extension twice by half a year. 3. DeutschlandStipendium National Scholarship Program The Deutschland stipendium provides financial support to ambitious and academically outstanding students from all over the world. Supports students at all participating universities in Germany without taking into account a person’s nationality, personal income or parental income. The scholarship is made possible through public-private sector cooperation where companies, institutions or individuals sponsor students at an amount of €150 per month while the Federal Government adds another €150 to this amount. This scholarship is awarded by universities, which means that applicants are required to meet the requirements of individual institutions. The scholarship is awarded for two semesters but may also be valid for the time covering the standard period of study. After two semesters, the university reviews a student who still meets the scholarship criteria, in order to proceed with private funding. Orientation programs and networking events as well as internships will also be available through this scholarship. 4. Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarships in Germany for International Students Students with above-average academic achievements and a keen interest in politics are eligible to apply for the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Scholarship. This scholarship program aims to encourage international students and doctoral candidates who have successfully completed their undergraduate studies in their home country. This scholarship is available to students wishing to complete a graduate, doctoral or research program. Priority will be given to doctoral students nominated from developing countries or countries undergoing political transition. Master’s and postgraduate students will receive 850 euros per month for two years. Doctoral candidates and those who come to Germany for research purposes will receive a monthly amount of €1,100 for three years. Tuition fees can be reimbursed up to €500 per semester (only courses related to the study/doctoral project). Through these scholarships, intercultural dialogues and international networks are promoted in order to develop relations between the countries of origin and the Federal Republic of Germany. 5. Erasmus Scholarship Programs in Germany Erasmus is also a wise choice for international students who aim to participate in a full-time study program in Germany. As an EU-wide scholarship funded by EU member states, Erasmus provides financial assistance for one-year exchange periods to international students at universities in Germany. In order to get the scholarship to Germany, you must be enrolled in a higher education institution and your home university as well as the German university must have signed the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education. NOTE: Germany Scholarships For International Students Most of the top universities in the European Union participate in the Erasmus programme, with German universities participating in several Erasmus Mundus Scholarship and Erasmus+ scholarship-funded study programmes.
