As the State Normal College for Colored Students, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University was established and had its first courses on October 3, 1887, with fifteen students and two instructors. Among historically black colleges and universities, FAMU, as it has come to be called, is currently the best institution.
In a wide range of academic fields, the University provides 54 bachelor’s degrees, 29 master’s degrees, three professional degrees, and 12 doctoral programs.

There are other majors offered in every subject, including engineering, nursing, and animal science. The school also provides a number of unique degree options. Advisor for Career Development at FAMU is Arnita Tucker Mcfarland. Her main objective is to provide students with knowledge and assistance as they create a professional track. Her and her team help students avoid major shifts and uncertainties by helping them select a major in which they are skilled and motivated.

The University’s main library, Samuel H. Coleman Memorial Library, is named in honor of Samuel Harrison Coleman, who devotedly served the institution for 14 years as general alumni president. The 88,964 square foot building has a classroom for information literacy, group study rooms, a student study lounge and cafe, faculty and graduate study carrels, and teleconference rooms.
Staffed by Florida-licensed physicians, advanced nurse practitioners, licensed practical nurses, certified medical assistants, and support personnel, FAMU Studnet Health Services offers high-quality healthcare.
For the benefit of the University Community, the Department of Campus Recreation provides a wide range of services and programs. The goal of the department is to provide a comprehensive and creative program of leisure, recreational, and exercise activities in order to suit the demands of a varied student body. Intramural sports, fitness and aerobics, and outdoor adventures make up the department.
