History of the mainland prison in Tanzania:
The Prisons Authority was officially established on August 25, 1931, after the division of the police and prison forces. Despite their responsibility to protect the security and property of foreigners, prior to 1931, police forces also performed prison duties in accordance with the colonists’ interpretation and purpose. In its infancy, the Prison Service was called the Prison Administration, as its activities remained the colonial practice of torturing prisoners as well as hard labor regardless of whether it was for their own good or for the benefit of the nation.

Vision and Responsibility of the Prison Service

The Prison Service in the 1990s established its vision and mission on the basis of the various changes that occurred.

The Prison Service’s role is to fulfill its role in promoting social security through prison administration and offender supervisors, and prisoner services, programs, and services address criminal reform needs and policy advice on crime prevention and criminal treatment.

The prison administration, by keeping prisoners in a safe environment, aims to protect society from these criminals, thus enabling them to participate fully in various productive activities for economic and social development.

In addition, by providing qualification and training programs for production and defense activities, the Prison Service aims to enable criminals to be freed from criminal activity in prisons and to return to society after serving their sentence in accordance with the laws of the country.
