The History of Valentine’s Day
The origin of the belief is that it came from the feast of the patron saints called Valentine, by the Catholic Church during the year 496 AD. This was a way to overcome the shadow and later replace it with the brutal Pagan festival in Lupercalia. This festival was celebrated at the beginning of spring and was honored in honor of the Roman god of agriculture, Faunus, on February 15. The goat and the dog would be sacrificed as a symbol of fertility and purity, respectively. Hence this involved tearing the goat’s skin into strips, dipping it in sacrificial blood, and drawing it on women and crops.
Although there are many Valentine’s Day associated with Saints’ Day, historians believe that the romantic component of how Valentine’s Day is celebrated today came from a priest martyred by Emperor Claudius II Gothicus around 270 AD. Different stories tell of different Saint Valentine with some saying that one of them married husbands in secret to prevent men from going to war, another healed the blind, and the following wrote to his daughter signed “Your Valentine”. There is also a possibility that they are the same person!
